Posted Date: 8/28/24 (3:38 PM)

The Phoenix Central School District recently honored two alumni whose music contributions have left an indelible mark on the Firebird community. During a ceremony held in the John C. Birdlebough High School auditorium, John Smiley and Mark Storrings were enshrined into the PCSD Music Hall of Fame, becoming the second-ever class of inductees.

“Our goal was to recognize and honor the accomplishments of outstanding musicians, actors, actresses, directors and major contributors to the Phoenix music program and to develop pride in the rich music traditions at Phoenix,” Superintendent Christopher Byrne said. “It is our hope not only to recognize and develop appreciation for the history of the Phoenix music program, but also inspire future students to strive for greatness.”

Byrne noted that both inductees have made significant contributions to the Phoenix music program, and welcomed music teacher Liza Grethel to read a few words about Storrings on behalf of Al Sweet.

“Mark, your induction into the Phoenix High School Music Hall of Fame is a testament not only to your extraordinary talent but also to your unwavering commitment to the arts,” Sweet wrote. “Your legacy is one of dedication, perseverance, and a deep love for music that has touched so many lives.”

Following a few words from Storrings and a certificate presentation, Smiley’s longtime friend and classmate Tim Barnhart addressed the audience.

“(John’s) passion, hard work and discipline has impacted thousands of people across the country,” Barnhart said. “During our time in Phoenix, John was the face of music, theater and the arts. He’s continued that journey throughout his life. Please help me in congratulating John Smiley.”

The inductees were both humbled by the honor and looked on with pride as their plaques were unveiled in the music wing along the Hall of Fame Wall.

About the inductees

Storrings (Performer, educator, and special contributor 1977-2024)

Mark Storrings, ’81, began playing the trombone in 1973 when inaugural PCSD Music Hall of Fame inductee Mr. P. assigned him that instrument. He received many music honors throughout school and was highlighted in his senior year as soloist on the jazz chart “Bein’ Green.” Mark began college studying music but completed his formal education in computer science. Despite the career change, music remained an important part of his life. Mark worked with the JCB marching band for nearly four decades and played dozens of musicals. As an adult, he has continued his studying with major symphony orchestra trombonists and is a fixture in area ensembles including the Central Winds, performing in both Chicago and San Antonio.

Smiley (Alumni and Performer 1993-1997)

John caught the theater bug at JCB as a sophomore starring in “Out of the Frying Pan” and “Guys and Dolls.” Guided by mentors Chuck Brown and Gregory Woodruff, he found a home in the Drama Club. Active in chorus and the Tri-M Music Honor Society, John excelled in All-County choruses, earning a NYSSMA All-State alternate spot. At SUNY Oswego, he pursued theater and sang with the State Singers. Relocating to NYC in 2003, he performed in regional and Off-Broadway venues, earning his Equity card in 2008. Completing his MFA at the University of Texas in 2013, he settled in Memphis, Tenn. Formerly the director of theater at Christian Brothers High School, he now teaches theater at the University of Memphis.
